The Incomparable Tilda Swinton

My BEST DRESSED award for this year's Oscars goes to...the incomparable Tilda Swinton.

Artistically swathed in Lanvin separates, Tilda epitomizes the "effortless cool" look I find so fantastically alluring. Ethereal, androgynous, and possessing a statuesque grace reminiscent of Michelangelo, Tilda Swinton is a fierce aesthetic force...and an unquestionable favorite of mine!

Stellar Style. Oscars 09

On the biggest night in Hollywood, the stars were looking stellar! The red carpet was ablaze with white-hot glamour. So it's no surprise then that my TOP PICKS for the evening were all heavenly visions of white.

Oscar winner, Penelope Cruz danced among the clouds in a breath-taking Balmain gown, joined by the beautifully eclectic Sarah Jessica Parker, in a Christian Dior Haute Couture dream. Successfully playing with volume, the two floated down the red carpet, like a lingering whisper of a reverie.

Anna Hathaway, in Armani Prive, and Taraji Henson, in Roberto Cavalli, stunned in the very absence of color as well, this time mixing textures, and creating an equally luminescent effect.

Speaking of celestial beings, no Oscar review is complete without the new generation's Hollywood titans. Brad Pitt, in classic Tom Ford, and the ridiculously gorgeous Angelina Jolie, in Elie Saab. And can we talk about the emerald-colored accessories on Jolie? Is it possible to be too good-looking?

While penguins are my favorite animal, the red carpet can start looking a little monotonous. However, a couple fellas did manage to stand out...or maybe I'm still just a sucker for the bad boy. Sean Penn was looking refined in all black-and I love, LOVE a satin lapel. And Robert Downey, Jr. was quite handsome in a beautiful tux that had a certain art-deco charm to it.

Ok, I threw the usually ultra-feminine, frock-wearing Eva in with the guys because she's proved she can hold her own with the big boys. She looks incredible. Enough said.

The coolest chick on the block...

....after last night's 2009 Grammy's show, is MIA. The girl impressively held her own with the "Rap Pack" of Hip Hop (Jay Z, Kanye, TI, and Lil' Wayne), PLUS she did it 9 months pregnant...on her baby's due date! I loved the incredulous expression on everyone's faces!

Last night's charming performance officially makes MIA one of the coolest chicks ever in my book!

Check out MIA as she performs "Swagger Like Us" with the Rap Pack...and a very pregnant belly:

Don't let the name fool you...

The SAG Awards aired recently and while the event's name might imply otherwise, there was nothing ill-fitting about this red carpet...aside from a couple randoms who were apparently unaware that this was, in fact, a RED CARPET event, and definitely not the place for denim...in any form. Here are a few of my favorites:

America Ferrera looking young and modern in a fresh nude Vera Wang gown, with black netting. The look is soft but edgy. Love it!

Taking a cue from Alannah Myles, Penelope Cruz dawned this sexy black velvet number by Azzedine Alaia. A new religion that'll bring us to our knees? Black velvet...yes, please! (I definitely would've gone with bolder accessories...a great geometric cuff perhaps or some stacked bangles.)
Kate Winslet looking flawless, yet again, in a cobalt blue gown by Narciso Rodriquez. The beauty can do no wrong in my eyes. And yes, I must admit, the junior high romantic in me is loving the fact that Rose & Jack, I mean, Kate & Leo are sharing the screen again!

Honorable Mention:

Saffron Burrows in an Alberta Ferretti gown. Love the gown, hate the hair! Let me tell you, the woman is gorgeous, the dress is gorgeous...the hair, however, needs a little help.
Evan Rachel Wood in a classic one-shoulder by Monique Lhullier. Honestly, I haven't really been a fan of Evan in the past, but she's been knocking it out lately. What can I say? I'm ALWAYS a sucker for redheads in teal!

Pause for a Moment...in Fashion: Golden Globes 2003

Kate Hudson killed it in a strapless Valentino number at the 2003 Golden Globes. And to this day, it is by far one of my favorite moments in fashion. It takes my breath away everytime I see it. If I owned this dress, I would hang it on my living room wall so I could revel in its beauty every single day. Too far?

Fresh. Effortless. Flawless.

The Not-So-Golden Globes

The Golden Globes aired last night and the red carpet was looking rather...uninspired. I mean, I understand the economy's shot, but I think that America was hoping the cathartic world of Hollywood would lift our spirits, stimulate our minds with a little glitz and glamour. The Hollywood Foreign Press apparently sent out a dress code memo requesting origami-inspired gowns or one-shoulder chiffon pieces for the women, and satin lapel tuxs for the men. A few ladies did, however, rise to the occasion, dawning fresh gowns and breathing life into an otherwise lackluster Golden Globes.

Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire) was stunning in this mustard-seed Christian Lacroix Haute Couture gown - a beautiful breath of fresh air amongst all the pastel chiffon.
Maggie Gyllenhaal was the epitome of cool in this printed, one-shoulder Lanvin gown. The exposed zipper on the side was hot, bringing some much needed rock'n'roll edge!

In THE color of the season, plum, Rumer Willis actually outshined her mother in this belted Reem Acra number. Her red hair and fair complexion were the perfect accessories for a look that oozed "young Hollywood".

Kate Beckinsale radiated white-hot glamour in this J. Mendel gown. She looks stunning. What else is there to say?

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

Vanessa Hudgens was refreshing in a nude beaded Alberta Ferretti gown. Her long necklaces made the look so age-appropriate and effortless.

Eva Longoria-Parker didn't disappoint in a show-stopping, fire engine red Reem Acra gown. You can always count on Eva to spice things up!
